Controlling Fleas In Modesto

Effective Flea Control Solutions for Your Home in Modesto & Beyond

One of the worst epidemics in recorded human history was the Black Death in medieval Europe, caused by the bubonic plague. About 1/3 of the population died from this disease, which was carried by rats bearing fleas infected with the disease. While the plague still appears in rare modern cases, it can be treated successfully if caught early enough.

At OnStar Pest Control, we understand the severity of flea infestations and the importance of acting quickly. If you remember the old adage—“If you see one flea, your house is infested”—then you already know how critical it is to address the issue immediately. When you consider the typical infestation breakdown (5% adults, 10% cocoons, 35% larvae, and the remaining 50% eggs), it’s clear why simply treating the visible adults will not solve the problem.

We take a comprehensive approach to flea control, targeting all stages of the flea life cycle for long-lasting results. Scroll to the bottom of the page for more information.

The Life Cycle Of Fleas

  • The first stage in the life of the flea is the egg, and the fact that a female adult can lay eggs every hour helps the average homeowner understand why controlling fleas is a true nightmare. These eggs can be laid on a host (usually a family pet, an invading raccoon or squirrel)  or inside your home on your carpet.  These eggs hatch anywhere from 1 to 6 days, depending on the temperature and humidity. If the conditions are not ideal for hatching, an egg can lie dormant for up to one year.

  • The second stage in the development of a flea is the larval stage.  Once again, the surrounding temperature and level of light allows for a range of hatching time to be present.  The larvae burrow into the host or your carpet, and you don’t need to worry about feeding them as the larvae feed off of the excrement of the adult fleas which feed off the blood of the host.  Larvae are sensitive to light and humidity and thrive in moist, shady areas.

  • The third stage is the pupa stage, where the larvae creates a cocoon around itself.  This cocoon is sticky which allows it to adhere to your poor pet or the carpet.  This phase looks a lot like little balls of dirt.  If you see these on the stomach of your pet, or around the head or tail area, you are probably looking at the pupa stage of the flea. Once it has completed the cocoon, an adult flea can emerge in a matter of a few days. The cocooned flea can be very aware of a host nearby, and will actually emerge sooner than planned to take advantage of the unaware host. The presence of larvae requires a very thorough vacuuming prior to any treatment by pesticides as you want to leave as few of these cocoons behind as possible. Their presence also explains why it can be so difficult to treat for fleas, as the thicker or more dense that the carpet is, the harder to get to the base of it.
  • The 4th and final stage of the life cycle of a flea is the adult, and if you have ever been in a home infested with fleas, you know how irritating and itchy the bites can be.  You also know that they are something you cannot tolerate in your home or on your pets.  They also represent a health risk because their bite can transmit both viruses and bacteria from other hosts that they have fed off of. From the time they emerge from their cocoon, they latch onto the nearest host and start their life as a parasite.

Effective Flea Control Tips for Homeowners

To prevent a flea infestation and safeguard your home, follow these practical flea control steps:

  • Vacuum Regularly: Vacuum carpets, furniture, and pet bedding to remove flea eggs, larvae, and cocoons. Focus on high-risk areas like under furniture, along baseboards, and in pet’s favorite resting spots.
  • Treat Your Pets: Use flea preventatives on your pets and take them to a veterinarian or groomer for professional flea treatments. This will stop adult fleas from laying more eggs in your home.
  • Maintain Your Yard: Fleas can live outside as well, so keep your yard clean by trimming grass and removing any yard debris. Fleas love shady, moist areas—so eliminating these environments reduces their hiding places.
  • Wash Bedding and Fabrics: Frequently wash your pet’s bedding, your bedding, and any fabric your pet frequents to help eliminate flea larvae and eggs that may be hiding.

By implementing these tips, you can significantly reduce the chances of a flea infestation and create a safer, more comfortable environment for your family and pets. For professional flea control and peace of mind, trust OnStar Pest Control to get the job done right.

How Fleas Impact Your Home & Health

  • Fleas aren’t just a nuisance for your pets—they can affect the health of your entire household. Left unchecked, a flea infestation can lead to significant discomfort and even health risks. Here’s why addressing a flea problem immediately is essential:

    • Flea Bites: Fleas feed on blood, and their bites can cause itching, allergic reactions, and skin irritation for both pets and humans.
    • Disease Transmission: Fleas can spread dangerous diseases, including the plague, tapeworms, and flea-borne typhus, putting your family and pets at risk.
    • Contamination: A flea infestation can severely damage your carpets, furniture, and pet bedding, creating an unhealthy environment in your home.
    • Increased Stress: Constant flea exposure can lead to anxiety for pets and owners alike, disrupting the peace and comfort of your home.

Taking immediate action is vital to protect both your home and health. At OnStar Pest Control, we offer professional flea control services to eliminate fleas at every stage of their life cycle, ensuring long-term results.

Flea Management in Oakdale, California

An adult flea can live for about 6 months, constantly feeding off of its host, mating, and depositing eggs. This vicious cycle should be interrupted early on to control the infestation and prevent future generations from thriving. OnStar Pest Control provides expert services in Modesto, Oakdale, Manteca, and surrounding areas to tackle even the most challenging flea infestations.

Our customers trust us to eliminate fleas at every life stage, including eggs and larvae that are difficult to control, especially in thick carpets. One female flea, capable of laying countless eggs, must be hunted down and destroyed for lasting peace in your home.

When you schedule your initial treatment, it’s important to follow specific steps for the best results. Take your pets to a groomer or veterinarian to treat them for active fleas, eggs, larvae, and cocoons. It’s essential to place them on flea prevention medication to avoid re-infestation. Additionally, ensure that your carpets are thoroughly vacuumed no more than 1 hour before our arrival to expose more fleas to our treatments.

Don’t delay in starting a maintenance program to ensure your home remains flea-free. Fleas go through 4 distinct life cycles, and you need to address all stages in order to truly eliminate the problem. Let OnStar Pest Control help you get long-term relief.
