Spider Pest Control

Controlling Black Widows & Spiders In Modesto, Oakdale, & Manteca Since 1998

There are several venomous spiders found in our area and they can include the Brown Widow, the Black Widow, the Brown Recluse, or the hobo spider. While there is some argument as to whether a bite can cause a fatality, it is acknowledged that their bite can be serious for an adult, and even more so for a child, the elderly or someone with a compromised immune system. Better to avoid their bite altogether, and that means avoiding the spider.

Below, we have listed these venomous spiders by their identifying characteristics.

The Brown Recluse Spider: When you look at a brown recluse spider, they don’t look particularly threatening. The marking that they are identified by is roughly violin shaped and found on its chest (thorax) area. A light brown in color, they are often confused with their larger but less venomous cousin the wolf spider. Rarely found in the Central Valley area, this 1/2″ spider is famous for being shy (reclusive) in its habits. Most bites are a result of trapping the spider inside a shoe, or while pulling on a sweater or a pair of pants. The bite itself is a very serious because the toxin can actually dissolve the flesh surrounding the bite, and requires immediate treatment by a knowledgeable emergency room.

The Black Widow Spider: Famous for the bright red hour glass found on the abdomen of the female of this species, the spider itself is a glossy black with thin and quite elegant legs. The web is unusually tough, and this can help identify the spider. Usually found in dark, dry locations such as work benches, wood piles, the bottom of outdoor planters or patio furniture, and stored items in garages or sheds. They really can be found anywhere, including the area in your bathroom under the cabinets. They are generally not aggressive unless they are guarding an egg. The bite is extremely painful, and can be accompanied by muscle cramping and contractions. Medical attention is indicated for children, the elderly, and those with a compromised immune system. Please be especially careful to those of you who live in the outskirts of town as we have seen a larger number of black widows all around Modesto outer areas.

The Brown Widow Spider: Identical to the black widow spider except for the coloring, which is a dull brown color and they are not super shiny. The brown widow is found in similar spots, and also identified by a strong and irregular web and an hour glass on its abdomen. The main difference between the two is the potency of the brown widow’s venom, which is double the toxicity. Even though the brown widow is slightly less aggressive, their bite is worse. It is generally wise to avoid either of these venomous spiders altogether.
